We are getting great responses from readers on our newest books including Lincoln's Better Angel, a novel by Author and Actor, David Selby.
Author Adam Freedman (Elated by Details (Mayhaven Publishing) and The Party of the First Part (Henry Holt and Co.) writes: A legal linguist's job is never done. Check out the New York Times for my Op-Ed on the language of the Second Amendment's "right to keep and bear arms": http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/16/opinion/16freedman.html
Harry and I enjoyed a recent lunch with author David Selby (Lincoln's Better Angel) and his wife Chip, overlooking the busy streets of Chicago. The conversation ranged from books to family and friends (including Jimmy John founder), some of which stopped by to say hello. What a wonderful way to kick off the holidays. For more information on the Selbys go to: www.davidselby.com
By the way, we enjoyed watching a week of "Duel" on ABC TV, produced by Jamison Selby.
Musician and Author, Randall Franks wrote to ask for the use of a recipe from Dr. Wayne C. Temple's The Taste Is in My Mouth a Little... for his upcoming cookbook, Southern Style: Musings, Memories and Marvelous Makin's, the proceeds of which will go to his not-for-profit Share America Foundation, Inc. serving Georgia and Tennessee. Some of you may remember Randall as "Officer Randy Goode" on TV's In the Heat of the Night, or other TV and film appearances. Others will know of his work, as a very young fiddle player, with Bill Monroe and, over the years, many others. He was inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004. Though Mayhaven is not publishing this work, we will let you know when it is available.
The talented Yolanda and Earl Hughes, drove from Pittsburgh, to visit with us during our recent trip to West Virginia. Yolanda won the Mayhaven Award for Children's Fiction with Cruisin' Sarah, for older children and young adults. A wonderful writer, Yoli and Earl have worked professionally in theater for many years. They are delightful company. So is their well-behaved little dog. No "Dog Whisperer" needed.
Congratulations! Harry Haines, Canyon, Texas, winner of Mayhaven Awards for Fiction. twice. We look forward to the publication of Orphan and Collusion.... See AWARDS
Our authors are everywhere! Articles, interviews and personal appearances are filling up the reminder of our 2007 and the 2008 calendar. See AUTHOR EVENTS.
We thank Bill Lucht, and Sandy Baker, her husband Ove (for his wonderful dinner and excellent conversation), their delightful daughter Joanna, and all those we met at the recent West Virginia Book Faire. The guest list was impressive, and included many fine authors and artists, including Amy Tan, author of The Joy Luck Club, and Kieu Chihn, memorable star of the movie version. Mayhaven was happy to take part in various events, including a presentation by screenwriter and novelist, Loraine Despres (you will remember her famous TV episode "Who Killed J.R.?", or her recent novels, The Scandalous Summer of Sissy LeBlanc and The Bad Behavior of Belle Cantrell. It was also inspiring to be present at a little bit of history when the charming Doro Bush Koch, assisted by and her lively sister-in-law, spoke about her memoir of George H. W. Bush: My father, My President.
We were pleased when Bill Lucht introduced author and actor David L. Selby's newest book, Lincoln's Better Angel, a moving and imaginative novel, in which Lincoln returns to the present as a fascinating ghost.
Woke up October 14 to see a mention of Robert Isham Auler's upcoming novel, Keep and Bear Arms in Roger Ebert's column. By the way, for those of you who don't know, Ebert has been selected as one of the most trusted columnists in America!
And a little while later, we watched as CBS Sunday Morning showed a clip from Tell Me You Love Me (HBO series), with another new Mayhaven author, actor and author David L. Selby, whose newest novel, Lincoln's Better Angel, will be available soon.
Wayne C. Temple, and co-author, Sunderine Temple (Abraham Lincoln and Illinois' Fifth Capitol), made a rare personal appearance at Pat Emmerling's wonderful Gift Shop in Taylorville, IL. You can also catch Doc Temple on the History Channel and he will appear in an upcoming PBS documentary on Lincoln.
Cullen Porter (Grandpa Grumpy Pants) and various sisters (Ten Sisters: A True Story and Ten Little Sisters) have been making personal appearances around the midwest.
HBO: David Selby, author of Lincoln's Better Angel, is playing opposite Jane Alexander in HBO's ground-breaking series, Tell Me You Love Me.
Congratulations Ten Sisters! Beginning in January 2008, a PBS documentary, Ten Sisters: A True Story, will be shown on many PBS stations across the country. Ask your local PBS station for dates and times in your area.
Thanks to Joe Morgan, author of Potato Branch: Sketches of Mountain Memories, and Into the Chilling Water (Bright Mountain Books) for including Doris Wenzel in his acknowledgements.
Big news! William Safire (New York Times Magazine) recommends The Party of the First Part by Adam Freedman (Henry Holt & Co.) as one of three late-summer reads about the "use and abuse of words." He praises the book as a "lighthearted but lucid explanation of legalese." We are pleased to say Freedman won Mayhaven Awards for Fiction for a collection of his short stories, Elated By Details.
