The Lincoln Poems, by Dan GuilloryAudio Book Read by the Author

Guillory's poems, that have been called both lyrical and audacious, are based on events in Lincoln's life.

Guillory is a prolific and insightful writer of both history and poetry.

"....This is a fine book, well crafted, well produced, and complete in itself, but it also has a value to drive one further into investigating this man who, in my travels abroad, I have found is better known than any other American. A final word on the last three poems, "Contents of My Pockets, April 14, 1865"; "Bullet in My Brain, April 15, 1865"; and "Alternate Ending". These are a tour de force. I have never felt Lincoln's death more keenly than in reading this trio, after the cumulative effect of the whole book. They are unforgettable."

—A brief portion of a review on The Lincoln Poems in the Illinois Times by Jacqueline Jackson, books and poetry editor, and professor emerita of English at the University of Illinois at Springfield

We are very pleased to announce that author Adam Freedman (Elated By Details, winner of Mayhaven's Award for Fiction) has an article in the recent Wall Street Journal ("Trial Lawyers Say It Better").

Freedman also penned Party of the First Part, praised by the late William Safire, (published by Holt and Co.)

WATCH FOR JACK ROCHE IN KEN BURNS' PROHIBITION.

First aired on PBS October 3, 4, 5, 2011

Jack Roche had already had two very full careers when he turned to acting late in his long life. We met when he auditioned for Without Discretion, a play I had researched, written, directed and produced on the life of Mary Todd Lincoln (funded by the Richter Foundation). Because he was interested in both acting and history, Jack auditioned and brought along a wonderful actress, Joan Pacejka, who would play an unforgettable Mary. Jack was also in the play, as the spiritualist. A year later, Jack and I would have roles in a film of scenes from Look Homeward Angel for the Illinois and National Endowments for the Humanities. Our lives would intersect many times after that—sometimes in work, sometimes for lunch and good conversation. Jack even made the trip to Champaign in 2007 for the premier of Ten Sisters: A True Story, and again in the fall of 2009, for his role in a staged reading of Without Discretion (again playing the spiritualist). In Prohibition, he departs from acting, and is interviewed for his very informed observations of Prohibition and Chicago politics.

While I knew he would be in the second segment of Prohibition, we were very pleased to see him in the first, as well, and his daughter says he might be in the third segment. We watched and will keep on watching, Jack.

A couple of days ago, I was watching a film on TV and saw that Mike Genovese had a role in it.

The last time I saw him was in Charleston, Illinois. I was housemother to 14 college students, and while Mike didn't live with us, he had friends who did, so he was a welcome visitor. I remember an early appearance he made as an actor on a St. Louis television show.

Kirk Combe's 2084, is a biting sci-fi satire on the future.

Kirk Combe's, 2084 - A sci-fi satire that pushes the limits of corporate extremes. Cover art by Clayton Combe.

2084 is a world run and employed by a single mega corporation, whose reach extends into the very brains of the population, tapping into their fantasies and their base drives at the expense of everyone and everything around them. This technically controlled society is opposed only by the shrinking members of a free-thinking humanity.

Author Kirk Combe believes fiction should not be a pleasant escape from social reality, but an intensive and imaginative exploration of it. 2084 is his first science-fiction novel.

Margaret Clem's Who Shot the Spatzies

This is especially appreciated by the author, who is legally blind. She dictated her original manuscript to her sister before sending it to Mayhaven.

A Story for The Entire Family

Who Shot the Spatzies sets out clearly and candidly what she witnessed during three years of the Great Depression, and her mother’s unnecessary death because she could not afford health care. Every word seems pertinent to today’s world, often filled with insecurity, fear, loneliness, and loss. And yet, it portrays the resilience of children and adults during devastating times. This writing demonstrates the power of kindness, laughter, love, and faith. This extraordinary story appeals to both children and adults—a true Crossover book.

Lincoln's Travels on the River Queen During the Last Days of His Life

—Also available in audio book—read by the author Dr. Wayne C. Temple

This is the eighth book written about Lincoln by Temple. This nonfiction work presents Lincoln in a little known setting. Temple has been called the greatest living Lincoln historian, and is a recipient of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial edition of the Order of Lincoln, the highest honor that can be awarded by the State of Illinois (2009). You may also see him as a guest historian in Prelude to the Presidency, now playing on PBS stations. Check your local schedule for dates and times.

"Once again, Lincoln scholar extraordinary Wayne Temple has filled a void in the Lincoln literature with an authoritative, exhaustive, and irresistibly lively account of one of the 16th President's favorite perks: his riverboat. Any Lincoln enthusiast lucky enough to pick it up will find it impossible to set aside; impeccably researched, it reads like an adventure story. The River Queen was a witness to history. Fortunately for us, so is Wayne Temple."

— Harold Holzer, co-chairman, U. S. Lincoln Bicentennial Commission

Dr. Temple's book, Abraham Lincoln: From Skeptic to Prophet, has been included on more than one list for the top 100 books on Lincoln.

Dan Guillory's People & Places in The Land of Lincoln

and Audio Version of People & Places in the Land of Lincoln

Cover photo of unusual ice formations in the Illinois woods, 2010, by Quintin Porter

on Mayhaven's Archives Page. (See above, left)

Dan Guillory is a prolific author. The Lincoln Poems, highly praised, has found a following among those who like history and literature. People & Places in The Land of Lincoln is likely to find a similar audience, especially if they enjoy visiting sites where Lincoln walked.

“As usual, Dan Guillory has created a very compelling look at the life and landscape of Abraham Lincoln, with his signature readability and clarity, in his use of language. The book is chock full of useful information, especially so for readers who will want to explore the Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area, even before they finish the read.” —Hal Smith, Director, Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area

“Some authors may falter if asked to burst the boundaries of a genre but not Dan Guillory. As a guide to Lincoln-related sites in central Illinois, this book provides much more. Insights and observations delivered through illuminating prose delight the reader. Guillory specializes in...finding ‘art and culture in the most unexpected and unpromising places.’ As surely as the corn and soybean yielded by rich soils, Dan Guillory proves once again why he is one of our region’s most valuable natural resources.” —Robert D. Sampson, Ph.D.

“People and Places in the Land of Lincoln is a treasure for those in search of the figure behind the chiseled statues, the voice behind the exquisite words, and the man beneath the top hat. ...Lincoln’s landscape is illuminated by Guillory—through story and setting...immersing readers in a sensory and historical journey through both the physical and inner terrain of a man who confronted the enormous struggles of his time with an interior cultivation of wisdom and integrity. Both Lincolnites and those who will undoubtedly join their ranks after encountering People and Places will be thrilled with a work that not only captures but also invites readers to experience intimately the quiddity of a man whose spirit stirs the marrow in our bone-centers.”

Note From the Publisher: When reading Ten Little Sisters, a story about separation, to 44 children in a local school I read, "They missed one another," a little boy in the front row held up his hand. "I know what that means. My Daddy is in Iraq." I stopped reading and asked for the hands of other children with parents, grandparents, brothers, or sisters, in Iraq or Afghanistan. Little hands went up all over the room. I glanced at the teacher. She nodded affirmation. I asked about their families and they responded, some with tears. We eventually went back to the book and they listened quietly. The teacher later wrote that she was glad I took the time to have each child speak. It wasn't a hard decision to make..

There are other children, in those war-torn areas, that are hurting. Gary Sinise and Laura Hilldenbrand are co-founders of Operation Iraqi Children (OIC). For over three years the organization has provided school supplies to children in Iraq, distributed by U.S. soldiers. You might want to contribute to this very worthwhile effort—Google Operation Iraqi Children.

Teachers, Professors and Mentors have played important roles in Wenzel's life. They include teachers: Helen Harrington, Glendon Gabbard, Dick Eastman, Donald Shanower, Anne Zeidman, Lilla Heston; and a special thanks to historian, researcher, and author, Wayne C. Temple.

Virtually all of the publisher's family have provided assistance to Mayhaven over the years through their various talents. Here the author's grown children at a casual family gathering, and notes on their expertise..

Back row, left to right: Teresa Porter Hackler (photographer); Brian Porter (author—Harvey's Life-Now What, also editoing and audio voice over); Todd Porter (author—Firefly Fred); Aaron Porter (graphic designer, artist, and tech support)

Front Row: left to right: Cullen Porter (author—Grandpa Grumpy Pants, graphic artist, editor, musician, audio voice over); Michelle Porter Petersen (typesetting, audio voice over); Quintin Porter (audio producer/director, marketing, and fulfillment).

Not shown is Kenneth Wenzel (musician). He wrote and performed original music for scenes of the PBS documentary: Ten Sisters: A True Story (based on the book of the same name)

Other members of the family have assisted: Lynn Porter (proofer, editor, marketing); Jennifer Porter (reader, internet research); Brett Petersen (designer, marketing); Elise Porter (proofer, marketing); Faye Porter (audio voice over); Samantha Porter (photographer, reader); Ryan Porter (reader); Sydney Porter (talent—TV ad); Nicholas Porter (talent—TV ad);and two of the ten sisters, Irma Allen and Deloris Hart, assisted in a number of ways in Mayhaven's office for over two years.

Tonya Abbott is taking some time off, after nearly 18 years with Mayhaven, seems like family.

We enjoyed having Sally Bridges with us for several months
